IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alice Elaine
Hagenlock
October 13, 1929 – November 27, 2024
Alice loved people with her kind, gentle heart and people loved her back. She had an eternal love for the Black Hills and the scenic views that her entire family shared with her.
Alice Elaine Hagenlock, 95, of Custer, SD, passed away November 27, 2024. Alice was born October 13, 1929, in Los Angeles, CA, to Rose and Walter Herzberg. The family lived in LA until 1932 when they relocated to Nebraska, near Bridgeport, to her paternal grandparents to assist them on their farm. When in Nebraska, Alice attended school in Alliance until the 3rd grade.
In 1937, her grandma Wickard had become very ill and the family moved to Custer. As the Wickards owned the Homestead Addition at that time, this is where they remained until Alice graduated from Custer High School with the class of 1947.
After graduating high school, Alice met and dated William 'Bill' Hagenlock. They later married in 1949. Their marriage was blessed with 3 daughters, Diana 'Dee', Connie and Mary. Alice was a charter member of the Dorcas Society. In the girls' youth Alice was a Girl Scout leader and very involved in 4-H. Bill and Alice were both avid bowlers which Alice continued through 2022 when she could no longer see the bowling pins. In October of 2017 she was honored with the Pioneer Award from the bowling association for her 65 years of bowling and for her dedication in helping to start youth bowling leagues in Custer.
During her working years Alice worked several jobs including the Ben Franklin, Evergreen Laundry and Cleaners, the Custer Nursing Home and the C&M Jewelry Company. She also worked seasonal jobs at the Custer Motel, Flintstones and Dakota Cowboy where she could introduce visitors to the many sights the Black Hills offered.
After Alice as widowed in 1988 she took the opportunity to travel with her mother and friends. Some of her travels included Washington, D.C.'s Cherry Blossom Festival, Branson, MO and Canada. The highlight of her travels was chaperoning a European trip with her granddaughter, Selena. The trip included Germany, Italy and London.
Alice was living at the Landover Estates for seniors with her daughter, Mary. Preceded in death was her husband of 49 years, William 'Bill' Hagenlock; her mother, Rose Herzberg and her father, Walt Herzberg. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Diana; Connie; Mary; her 5 grandchildren, Nichole Robinson; Aaron Coleman; William 'Bill" Laurienti; Amber Powers; Selena Powers; her 4 great grandchildren, Devin and Cody Robinson and Olivia and Salvador Laurienti.
She enjoyed reading, music, dancing, traveling and taking car rides through her beloved Black Hills. She will be sorely missed.
