Rapid City - Alice J. Stutzman, 90, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009, at a local nursing home.
Alice was born August 30, 1918, in Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Frank and Jessie (Newberry) Lake. The family moved to Buffalo Gap, SD in 1927. Alice attended school in Buffalo Gap, graduating from high school in 1937.
Alice married Elsward Stutzman on August 8, 1940. They moved to Oregon in 1941 and returned to South Dakota in 1944 where they farmed between both Oral and Buffalo Gap. In 1963 they moved to Hot Springs where Alice worked at the VA Hospital. They returned to Buffalo Gap after retirement. Elsward passed away in 1994 and Alice remained in Buffalo Gap until 2003.
Through her life, Alice enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and bowling. She was especially famous for her delicious homemade pies.
Survivors include her son, Gary and Carol Stutzman, Hermosa, SD; daughter, Cindy and Bret Whitmore, Rapid City, SD; daughter-in-law, Valena Stutzman, Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Laurel Donnafield, Casa Grande, AZ; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Grave side services for the family were held Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery, Buffalo Gap, SD.
