Obituary

On October 18, 2018, Allen Walter Wightman, of Hermosa, SD,  left his family on earth to join his heavenly father and family. Over his 63 years of life, he gave of himself to so many people. He loved people and had friends all over the country.

Allen was a fruit farmer and entrepreneur. He started his own cider mill, trucking company, and sprint car racing team. He loved to work hard (and play hard) until his diabetes started to significantly impact his life at age 40. However, he used his health challenges to help others. He was a role model of strength, perseverance, and positive attitude. He found his strength through his unwavering faith in God.  He was always filled with such joy because he was serving God every day through his interactions with others.

Allen's greatest achievement was his role as a husband and father. He married his soulmate, Lori in 1986. They had two beautiful daughters Elisabeth (Lisa) and Ashley. He dedicated his life to being a loving husband and father—always encouraging the women in his life to be strong, independent, and of deep faith.

Allen is survived by his wife, Lori of Hermosa; daughters, Lisa Wightman of Rapid City, SD; Ashley (Patrick) Balsman of St. Louis, MO; brothers, Brian Wightman of Grand Haven, MI; Ross Wightman of Fennville, MI; and sister, Martha Wightman of Hamilton, MI.

Allen did not want a large funeral. He knew he had many loving friends, but did not want to overwhelm his daughters during their time of grief. He will return to Michigan to join his parents. A small graveside service will be held in the spring.

The family would like to start a fund in Allen's name to support youth with diabetes. We welcome contributions to this fund to honor his legacy. Contributions in Allen's name can be made by going to www.regionalhealth.org , selecting "Ways to Give" and "Donate Now". Contributions can be mailed to Regional Health Foundation PO Box 6000 Rapid City, South Dakota 57709.
