Obituary

Anna Jane Sedlacek, age 89, of Edgemont, SD, passed away March 12, 2014, at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer, SD.

Anna was born August 29, 1924, in Red Oak, IA, to Michael and Lucy (Shay) Murray. Anna was raised in Nebraska and in her late teens moved to Arkansas. This is where she married Joseph A. Sedlacek on May 27, 1947. Four of their five children were born during their time there. Around 1953 the family moved to Provo, SD, where Anna owned a small café. They soon bought land in Dudley where they built a home and where their fifth child was born. Anna worked in several cafes around town as a waitress and later on as a cook. Anna was well known in the community for her skills.

When her husband became ill she became the sole wage earner and worked more than one job to provide for her family. When her husband died in December of 1959, Anna took on the role of a single mom and raised the children ranging in age of 14 years down to 5 years old by herself. They may have not have had everything they wanted but they had all they needed. In the early seventies she went to work for Kustom Kraft Corporation, where she remained until she retired. Anna enjoyed her family, sewing, crocheting, camping and gardening.

She was a member of the Saint James Catholic Church and a member of the Edgemont Senior Citizens Center. She lived in her home alone in Edgemont until August 2013 when she moved to Custer Regional Senior Care until her death.

She is survived by her four children, Juliann (Bruce) Bown of Edgemont; JoAnn (Bill) Pond of Rapid City, SD; Gene (Linda) Sedlacek of Rapid City; Robert (Candy) Sedlacek of Ely, NV; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Anna is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; son, George, Sr.; two grandsons, George, Jr. and Todd; great grandson, Kyle; two brothers Joe and Mike as well as her sister, Mary Francis.
