IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anthony Basil
Smith
November 18, 1958 – November 24, 2021
Anthony Basil (Tony) Smith recently of Hot Springs, SD, passed away on November 24, 2021 at the age of 63 after a 20 year battle living with cancer. Born on November 18,1958 in Gardena, CA, a birthday he enjoyed sharing with Mickey Mouse.
After graduating from Vintage High School he attended the Oregon State University Farrier Program. He loved challenges and took great joy in learning to do new things and used that talent to build a successful career as a horseshoer in the Napa Valley. His love for outdoor activities like hunting, hiking, and camping inspired him to move his family from Napa, CA to Divide, CO. Eventually he retired from a career with Colorado Natural Gas, Summit Utilities to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.
Tony was a natural leader who always offered a solution when others might complain and continually encouraged his sons to try new things. He coached their baseball teams and ended up the head of the league. He loved history and joined the National Civil War Association; going from a Trooper in the 9th VA Cavalry to Lt. Colonel of the Union Army. His ability to portray different roles, both Union and Confederate, inspired young people and their families too. Everyone he met and every organization he joined was left better for his presence.
Tony is survived by his wife, Mari; three boys Michael (Shannon) Smith of Minneola, FL; Trenton Smith of Colorado Springs, CO; Aric (Sierra Williams) of Greeley, CO and his granddaughters, Finley and Jessie. Tony also leaves behind his parents, Basil and Elizabeth Smith of American Canyon, CA; his brother, Alan (Pauline) Smith of Winnemucca, NV and his sister, Amy Smith.
Tony's absolute commitment to his wife and their obvious love for each other has and always will be a shining example to all the loved ones he leaves behind. Esteemed father, loving husband, faithful friend, and adoring "Grumpy" to his granddaughters, Tony leaves behind a legacy that will long endure.
"Boots and Saddles, boys! We're burning daylight!"
Private family services will be held at a later date.
