Argalene Floy Amiss, 78, of Hot Springs, SD passed away August 12, 2008 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Argalene was born May 22, 1930 in Melvern, IA to Wilbur and Hazel Ada (Martin) Young. She was raised with her Mother's family in Upton, WY graduating from high school in 1949. Starting in 1950 she attended BHSC going to school in the summer and teaching during the school year in Carlile, WY. While there she met and married Clifford W. Amiss on December 17, 1951. They moved to Hot Springs in 1952, where she lived and worked the rest of her life. She worked for the Ben Franklin store for many years, the state of South Dakota: first for SDSU home extension department and then for the State Veterans Home as the activity director. Upon leaving there she opened her own store, Argalene's Gold and Glass selling pretty things and Black Hills Gold jewelry.
Argalene was a very active member of the Hot Springs community: Kiwanis, Shakespeare, Seekers and Monday Club. She was Citizen of the year in 2004, a member of United Churches she taught Sunday school for fifty years. She loved doing crafts, stained glass and all kinds of needle work. She loved to give, her hands were to service and her heart was to God. She was a "can do" woman if it needed to be done. She was always there for others, and willing to help in any way that she could.
Argalene is survived by her daughter, Tena (Byron) Dutenhoeffer of Bromfield, CO; grandson, Wesley Dutenhoeffer of Broomfield, CO; her siblings on her father's side: half-brothers, Matt (Sue) Young of Council Bluffs, IA; Ray (Nancy) Young of Omaha, NE; Joe Young of Missouri Valley, IA; half-sister, Patty (Floyd) Allen of Onawa, IA; step-sister, Freda (Alonzo) Bennett of Omaha, NE; her mother's children: half brothers, Tom (Karen) Ellis of Casper, WY; half-sisters Betty Jean (Dave) Reynolds of Rapid City, SD; Kitty (Robert) Willis of Upton, WY and special friend Judy Shaffer
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clifford Wesley Amiss, and half-brother Jerry Ellis.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2008 with a prayer service beginning at 6:00 p.m. at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.
Memorial Services will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating. A private family committal service will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Argalene's name to benefit the United Churches' Sunday School Program.
