Arlene Faye Muhm Hatch, 82, passed away December 28, 2019, at her residence in Hot Springs, SD.
Arlene was born June 15, 1937, in rural Oelrichs, SD, to Gordon and Martha (Kneebone) Muhm. She attended various country schoolhouses in that area while growing up in a homestead shack. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in May 1955 and married Alfred E. Hatch shortly afterward. To this union 4 children were born, Linda; Joyce; A. Mark and Robert. While a stay-at-home mom she became a foster parent to many Native American children, two of whom she raised to adulthood, Floyd and Lester Levitt. She also babysat for numerous families in the Hot Springs area and took in sewing and mending for people. She took mail order classes in upholstery to become an upholsterer which she started doing out of her home. She later worked out of an upholstery shop in downtown Hot Springs on N. River Street. She was employed at Domestic Electric and the liquor store.
After divorcing Alfred in 1972, she moved her brood of 6 children out to the Cheyenne River property. She then became a sales associate with J.C. Penneys until they closed. She moved down the street to Pamida and moved with them to the new Shopko building west of town. She worked as a desk clerk for Comfort Inn and recently retired from the Baymont.
Arlene is survived by her siblings, Judy Muhm and Gordon (Bev) Muhm; her children, Linda (Steven) Varvel; A. Mark Hatch and Robert (Kara) Hatch; grandchildren, Elijah; Melissa; Erin (Josh); Joshua (Kassy); Christopher; Taylor and Zona; great granchildren, Elena; Thomas; Julianna and Josh Jr; and a host of friends.
Predeceasing Arlene are her parents; siblings, Margaret; Elsie; Charles; David; daughter, Joyce; foster sons, Floyd; Lester; and grandchildren, Joseph and Christina.
Visitation and Fellowship will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2020, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2020, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs. Committal services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
A memorial has been established in Arlene's name to benefit the Elks National Foundation Scholarships enf@elks.org
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs. SD.
