Arlis Rae (Manke) Hoime, died at Mary House in Pierre, SD on Saturday, September 22, 2007.
Her parents were Bernel and Lois ( Ingalls) Manke of Selby, SD. Arlie and her twin sister Fran, were born January 1, 1937 in Bowdle, SD. She loved growing up in Selby surrounded by many family members and friends. She never forgot that beloved town.
A fine student, Arlie was active in numerous school activities, particularly in music. When they were very young, the twins began to sing duets. As they grew older, they enjoyed many rewarding experiences singing together. Arlie graduated from Selby High School in 1955. She attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and University choir.
On September 2, 1956 she married the love of her life, Knute Hoime. After one year in Mobridge the couple moved to Sacramento, CA where they lived for thirteen years, their two children Tim and Steffi were born there. In October 1970 Knute and Arlie moved to Custer and purchased the Jack and Jill Food Center. Arlie's mother and father had owned and operated a Red Owl Grocery Store in Selby in the early 1950's, so she was accustomed to the long hours and demanding pace of the supermarket industry. Arlie was responsible for keeping the books and administering payroll while also serving as a part time cashier and stocker. She and Knute worked side-by-side until Knute's untimely death in January of 1983. Arlie continued to operate the store until selling to her son Tim and his wife Dee in November of 1985.
Arlie was an active member of the Community Church and Chapter AW PEO in Custer. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, cooking, shopping and traveling. Together Knute and Arlie traveled to Hawaii, the Bahamas and to Paris, France. Most treasured in her life were her family members, her friends and her cats. Arlie moved to Pierre, SD in 1997 to be near her daughter and family following a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. She resided at Kelley's Retirement Home and later at Mary House in Pierre.
She will be greatly missed by her survivors, son, Tim and Dee Hoime of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Stephanie and Doug Knutson of Pierre, SD; twin sister, Fran (Ed) Himrich of Custer; sister, Cynthia ((Harvey) Jewitt of Aberdeen; sister-in law, Barb Manke of Spearfish; her two cherished grand daughters, Rachel and Elizabeth Knutson of Pierre; step grandson, Chad Loseth and wife Anita and their children Justin and Shelby as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, September 24, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at McColley's chapel of the Hills in Custer.
