Arthur Ellis 'Art' McKnight, age 84, of Edgemont, SD, passed away peacefully at the age
of 84 on July, 30, 2010, in the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Art was born on December 9, 1925, in Coleman, SD, to Edna Estella Anderson
McKnight and Edward Irvan McKnight. He grew up on the homestead outside of Edgemont. He was the oldest of five children, John (Shirley) McKnight, Jim (Joyce) McKnight, Dick (Shirley) McKnight and Reva Whipple and had many stories to share.
Art moved to Seattle, WA, and joined the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. He attended boot camp in Farragut, ID, and served during WW II in the Pacific Region. He served on board the USS Lexington and the USS Bon Homme Richard at the Navrec Stm. in Seattle, WA. Art was discharged from the Navy in January of 1947. At that time he obtained his GED and attended University of Washington. He eventually moved from Seattle to Browning, MT, just outside Glacier National Park and in September of 1960 married Jane Irene June. They bought the Western Motel in Browning and were the sole proprietors for twenty-seven years. Art was a devoted father and grandfather, enjoyed fishing, hunting and exploring the outdoors. He was a serious rock hound, had a big personality and was known for his sense of humor, especially puns, sometimes to the consternation of his family.
Art is survived by his daughter, Connie McKnight of Poulsbo, WA; son, Don McKnight of Briggsville, WI; three brothers, John (Shirley) McKnight of Edgemont, SD; Jim (Joyce) McKnight of Rapid City, SD; Dick (Shirley) McKnight of Portland, OR; sister, Reva Whipple of Alliance, NE and one grandson.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to his Celebration of Life Service which will held at
1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2010, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Edgemont with Pastor Bob Williamson officiating. A reception at the Senior Center in Edgemont will follow.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to the ICU doctors and team at the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE, for his amazing care in his last days. We will miss him dearly.
