Bernice Fleming Miller, age 83, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at her home in Edgemont, SD.
Bernice was born May 8, 1927, on a farm 12 miles northwest of Kimball, SD, to Richard and Delia (Foley) Fleming. She attended Brchan School until March of seventh grade, finishing school in Kimball and graduating in 1945. She received a two-year certificate in Elementary Education from Black Hills Teachers College. She taught two years in rural schools in central South Dakota before teaching first grade in Edgemont for three years. She had a private kindergarten in her home one year. On June 4, 1951 she married Ralph Miller.
She was always involved with St. James Catholic Church. She and Ralph were part of the Sunday night bingo fund-raisers to pay for the parish center. She enjoyed ice skating parties, 4-H, baseball, football and chaperoning dances. She also enjoyed the many friends she met over the years she served as secretary for the Cottonwood Grazing District. When she was able, she supported her grandchildren as they performed or competed in their various activities.
Bernice is survived by her husband of 59 years, Ralph; son, Rodney Miller, Sheridan, WY; three daughters, Mary Kay (Mike) Thompson, Hot Springs, SD; Carol Percival, Gillette, WY , and Nancy (David )
Mullaney, Fruitdale, SD; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, Richard, John, Francis, Charles, James, Bernard (Bud), and Philip; two sisters, Mary Disburg and Rose Leischner and a grandson, Morgan Garrett.
A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 3, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 4, 2010 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Peter Kovarik officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Bernice's name to benefit St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont and Compassionate Care Hospice in Custer. Contributions can be made c/o Ralph Miller, PO Box 290, Edgemont, SD 57735.
