Obituary

Betty Jean Edelman Merwin, 71, of San Diego, CA, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Betty was born August 23, 1946, in Hot Springs, SD, where she was raised and went to school for all 12 years. Following High School graduation in 1965, Betty was married to Jerry Walden for ten years having three children Jeff, Stacy and Lisa. She was later married to Royce Edelman for 20 years having born one child, Trevor, and adopting a second child Cade.

A devout and loving mom, Betty showered her children with love and always made holidays extra special going all out with decorations and gifts. Her passion was baking and she always had something sweet and delicious in the oven. She enjoyed sharing her goodies with family, friends and coworkers. She also loved music and dancing, with the jitterbug being her favorite dance.
Betty enjoyed helping others and worked hard for over 40 years as a nurse's aide, with most of her career spent at the Hot Springs State Home and the Ft. Meade Medical Center in Sturgis, where she retired. She then moved to San Diego, CA, to be with her daughter, Lisa, and enjoy the sunshine.

Betty was a sweet and loving person that will not be forgotten. She leaves a void that that cannot be filled and she will live forever in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and many friends that love her so dearly. Our only comfort is knowing she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of God and her Mom and Dad.

Betty is preceded in death by her infant son, Trevor Edelman; parents, Eugene and Iola Merwin.

She is survived by her four children, Jeff Walden of Wasilla Alaska; Stacy Walden of Aberdeen SD; Lisa Pekny of San Diego, CA; Cade Edelman of Sturgis, SD; her sisters, Millie Jahrig of Brewton, AL, and Jan Wilson of Laguna Woods, CA; her Brother, Wayne Nyberg of Clovis CA; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at Chamberlain-McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating. Committal services will follow at the Fairview Cemetery near Oral, SD.
