Calvin Dean Van Ornam who was born on June 3, 1932 to Donald R. and Ruby E. Van Ornam in Republic, County, Kansas, died December 7, 2016 at age 84. He attended a one room country school, Rosemound Dist. 76 during his 8 grade school years. He graduated from Hardy High School in Hardy, Nebraska and entered the US Air Force on June 7, 1950, to attend the USAF Band School in San Antonio, Texas.
In 1951 Calvin married NyLotis Trumaline Fisher of Falls City, Nebraska celebrating 65 years of marriage this last July. To this union were born 3 daughters, Karen Zortman of Custer, SD, Karla Van Ornam-Humphrey of Rogers, AR and Kym Van Ornam-Barnett of Maricopa, AZ.
Also born were 7 grandchildren, Sean of Utah, Joseph of Michigan and David of South Dakota, Conner of Arizona and Aiden of Rogers, AR. Stephanie and Stacy of Arkansas. In addition to these grandchildren are 10 great grandchildren, Kyle, Chelsey, Matthew, Amy, Rachel, Tyler and Ethan, Austin, Abbi and Sydney.
Calvin served in the US Air Force in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge from the US Air Force he entered the VA OJT training program in radio-electronics in Concordia, Kansas. Calvin worked in there for 10 years then started to work for the US Forest Service in Custer, SD as an electronic technician.
During his employment with the US Forest Service, he worked at assignments in Custer, SD, Delta, CO, Atlanta, GA and Albuquerque, NM. In Albuquerque he was Regional Radio Communications Manager for the forests in New Mexico and Arizona. Upon retirement from the Forest Service in Dec. 1985 he worked for nine years as a consultant for the Animal Damage Control (ADC) program.
Calvin was a life member of the VFW, Perpetual Life member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Scottish Rite, Valley Of Deadwood, Deadwood, SD. He was a member of the Naja Shrine of Deadwood, SD, as well as a member of the Radio Club of America.
Interment will be in the Mausoleum of Angels in Lincoln Memorial Park in Lincoln, NE and cards of sympathy can be mailed to NyLotis Van Ornam at 12325 Harris Lane, Custer, SD 57730.
