Carl LeRoy Barrick, 71, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away July 30, 2017, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home.
Carl was born, September 24, 1945, to Clyde and Charlotte (Hoover) Barrick in Ashland, OH, where he graduated from Ashland High School. Carl proudly served in the United States Army in the Korea and the Asian Theater from October 18, 1965, until his honorable discharge on October 17, 1967. Carl married Marie Herman in 1967, and they bought their only longtime home in Hot Springs the same year. They were blessed to have adopted their oldest daughter, Carla, in 1972, and their youngest daughter, Carol, was born to the couple in 1973. Marie passed away 28 ½ years later. He also married Cindy Martinez in 2000, and she passed away 5 years later.
Carl proudly worked at the Fall River Hospital and when it came under different ownership, he retired after 47 years of service. He also worked as church janitor at The United Churches in Hot Springs for over 17 years. Many who knew him would agree that Carl will be best remembered for his laughter, easy demeanor and generous spirit. He was a hard worker, a great husband, father, co-worker and friend. He delighted in making other people's day better with his lovable personality and always thought of others even before himself many times. Carl demonstrated a true lesson in kindness and forgiveness to those he cared about the most. Also, he loved reading books, watching movies about westerns and war dramas.
Carl was fortunate to have spent his last years at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home where he was treated with great respect, care and friendship by staff and residence for which his family is greatly appreciative.
Carl is survived by his two daughters, Carla Barrick of Seattle, WA; Carol Means of St. Paul, NE; sister, Velma (Jeff) Blake of Ashland, OH; two nephews, Michael Waugh of Chadron, NE; Jason Blake of Columbus, OH; two nieces, Brenda Hopkins of Washington State; Tiffany Cochran of Mansfield, OH; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.
A celebration of Carl's life will begin 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 7, 2017, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs with Chaplain Morris Nelson and Chaplin Tom Peacock officiating.
Interment will follow at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Hot Springs Veterans Honor Guard.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.
