Carl Glenn Fields, 60, of Chadron, NE., died Wednesday, February 27th at Black Hills VA Hospital, in Hot Springs, SD. He was born July 19, 1947 in Colby, Kansas to Glenn and Verla Fields.
Carl graduated from Boulder High School, Boulder, CO., in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967, serving in Japan, then in Vietnam. He proudly served in the Mobile Riverine Forces and with the U.S. Navy Assault Force. He received the award of the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat "V". He later transferred to Danang West Security. He completed 4 years of military service as of July 1970. Upon returning home Carl became a nursing assistant with the local hospital in Pueblo, CO. On March 13, 1971, he married Amy K. Mundy in Pueblo, Co. He worked at Downey VA Hospital in Downey, Illinois and at Bay Pines V.A. Hospital in Bay Pines, Florida. He received the degree of Associate in Arts at St. Petersburg, Junior College, in St Petersburg, Florida, in 1978. He then received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Land Resources, from Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana in 1982. He worked in Denver Colorado with the Bureau of Land Management at the Colorado State Office until 1988. He then became a subcontractor, as a computer specialist and support, for various companies in the Metro Area. He moved with his family to Chadron in 2001, when he began work with the U.S. Forest Service. He also worked for Rick's Foreign Car Service, Native American Center, and Head Start, until retirement in 2003
Carl was a wonderful and loving husband, dad, and granddad. He took great joy in family, friends, church, science, and the many trips into surrounding countryside and the Black Hills.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Amy of Chadron; five daughters, Crystal Haslett of Chadron; Denette Murphy of Coos Bay, OR; Deanna Fields, Miranda Fields, and Alannah Fields all from Chadron; one son Nathan Fields of Gillette, WY; granddaughters, Opal Fields of Chadron; Ayla Rhoades and Ayvree Fields of Gillette WY; mother, Verla Fields; sister, Colleen Rea and brother John Fields, all from Coquille, OR.
Committal Services will be held 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Memorial Services will be held 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, at Chadron Community Church, with Rev. Kevin Smith officiating.
