Obituary

Carl Glen Searby, age 85, of Edgemont, SD, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2014, at the Hot Springs VA Medical Center surrounded by a truly caring and dedicated staff and doctors.

Carl was born August 30, 1928, on his parents' farm near Crookston, NE, to Clio (Westlake) and C. Chester Searby, and then later lived with them near Long Valley, SD, where they raised sheep. Carl had 8 siblings, went to school, and helped around the house. When he was 18 he enlisted in the US Air Force of April 1947. After becoming a Corporal he was given an honorable discharge and returned home to marry Belva Jean Scholl of Wamblee, SD. They married on March 17, 1951, and started their own farm and family.

After several years they moved to Pierre, SD, to raise their 5 children. Carl worked several jobs and later moved to Edgemont, after finding work with the SD State Veterans Home, a job he was very proud to have. He retired from there and worked a short time at Customs Craft Woodworks. Carl enjoyed staying busy in town helping as many people as possible, cutting grass, working odd jobs, shopping, reading, and taking care of his cats. The best part of the day was having lunch at the Cheyenne River Supper Club and ice cream in the afternoon at P.J.'s.

Survivors include his children, Colleen Kayser; Frank Searby; Joyce Alexander; Glenda Klarich; Steve Searby; granddaughters, Christa Striano; Samantha Klarich; Krisana Jakeway; great grandchildren, Autumn Roberts; Delilah Strlano; Thrain Kumley; brothers, Earl; Wiley; and Jim Searby; also numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Clio Searby; sisters, Lila Hart; Ruth Capp; brothers, Jay Searby; Kenneth Searby; and Nyle Searby.

To the world he was a person, but to us he was our world.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, with Rev. Loyd Nielson officiating.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com
