Obituary

Clarence "Red" Zacher, age 72, of Custer, SD, died May 1, 2007 at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Bloomington, Illinois.

Red was born September 22, 1934 in Eagle Butte, SD to Peter and Elizabeth (Schmaltz) Zacher. Red attended college at Northern State University, receiving his Bachelors Degree in Education. He taught math in both High School and Junior High School. He enjoyed coaching football, basketball, track and golf. As a golf coach he was awarded Coach of the Year. Red also received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year honor from the school of Mines and Technology. Overall he taught school for 35 years, in Faith, Big Stone City and primarily in Custer, where he retired. Children loved him and him them. He touched a lot of lives through his teaching.

Red and his wife, Betty (Messmer) were married 49 years this month. They enjoyed their retirement by spending winters in McAllen, Texas. Red loved to fish, golf and a good card game but most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Custer.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, John (Sarah) Zacher of Ft. Collins, CO; Richard (Stephanie) Zacher of Custer, SD; two daughters, Kathy (Neil) Porubensky of Black Hawk, SD; Lynn (Tom) Groh of Apple Valley, MN; three brothers, Bill (Bernice) Zacher of Great Falls, MT; Francis (Geraldine) Zacher of Eagle Butte, SD; Jim (Linda) Zacher of Richfield, MN; two sisters, Sister Mary Immaculata of Georgeton, CA; Mary Jean (Roger) Prunty of Tabor, SD; ten grandchildren, Amanda John; Brandon Porubensky; Brittany Porubensky; Alex Groh; Hannah Groh; Kathrine Groh; Noah Zacher; Leah Zacher; Natalie Zacher and Shauna Zacher.

Red was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elizabeth (Schmaltz) Zacher and brothers, Sylvester and George.

Wake services will be held 7:00 pm, Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer, SD with Father Peter Kovarik officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery in Custer.

A memorial scholarship fund has been established in Clarence's name.
