Obituary

Clayton Peters passed away on February 18, 2019, at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center in
Custer, SD. He was 84 years old. Clayton was born on September 28, 1934, in Hot Springs,
SD, to William E. and Lizzie Peters. He grew up on a cattle ranch 20 miles south of Hot Springs with his
parents and nine sisters. He attended Lithia School through eighth grade and when it came time to go
to high school in Hot Springs he elected to stay at home and help with the farm work.

Clayton helped his Dad and also worked for other ranchers and farmers in the area. In later
years he worked for Burlington Railroad. He enjoyed country life and was especially good with horses
and cattle. He also liked hunting, fishing and picking berries.

Although Clayton had no children of his own he was a wonderful Uncle to his many nieces and
nephews. He enjoyed introducing them to what life in the country was like especially if they were from
a big city. He was never much of a letter writer but enjoyed hearing from everyone in the family.

Clayton spent some time in Minnesota and except for working for Burlington railroad and other
area ranchers he spent most of time working on the ranch. When his mother moved into Hot Spring in
1983, Clayton found a place to live in Edgemont senior housing. He was happy to be around people his
own age and to live independently in his own apartment. In 2015, at the age of 80 he could no longer
live alone and moved to Custer Regional Senior Care Center where he received excellent care until his
death.

Clayton is survived by his seven sisters, Rosemary To, Montebello, CA.; Edith Fisher her husband
Ed, Belle Center, Ohio; Flora Stearns and Alice Peters, Hot Springs; Helen Peters, Anchorage, AK; Betty
Crippen, Royal Oak, Michigan; and Paulene Staben her husband, John, Oral, SD; many nieces and
nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Darlene and
MaryAnn.

A graveside memorial service will be held, summer 2019, at Horsehead Cemetery in Rural Fall River County near the ranch where he spent most of his life.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
