Obituary

Clinton 'Clint' Gregory, 89, of Pierre, SD, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at his home in Pierre.

Clinton Gregory was born on April 20, 1926, in Hot Springs, SD, to Clinton Jay Gregory and May (Turner) Gregory. Clint graduated from the Hot Springs High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1944, and after graduation from school served for two years during World War II. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. Clint first began his career in the field of engineering while in high school at Igloo, SD, as a rod man and chainman on a housing project in 1943. In between his military service and during breaks in the time he was in college he worked as a chainman for the Amerada Oil Company, instrument man, party chief and on up to project engineer for the Soil Conservation Service on the Angostura Irrigation Project at Oral, SD.

Clint married his high school sweetheart, Millie Schweizer in 1945 and they had three children: J. Steven, Melinda and Shelley. Following graduation from college Gregory was employed by an Engineering consulting firm as a Civil Engineer. In 1956 he became the State Airport Engineer for the State of South Dakota where he served until 1959 when he was appointed District Engineer with the Asphalt Institute for the States of North and South Dakota. In 1962 Clint began a long career with the South Dakota Department of Transportation commencing as Bituminous Engineer, followed by State Traffic Engineer and ending at his retirement in 1988 after ten years as Chief Roadway Design Engineer.

Clint was elected Pierre City Street commissioner in 1963 and after serving in this position of seven years was elected Mayor, serving two terms until 1980. The projects he most enjoyed being involved with were the paving of city streets, underground power lines installation, construction of Rawlins Library and acquisition of Hills View Golf Course. In 1988 the Gregory's moved back to their roots to Hot Springs, SD where Clint started a consulting practice specializing in land surveying and forensic engineering which he continued until 2011.

Clint was a Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor. He was Surveyor of the Year in 1993, and President of the South Dakota Municipal League in 1975. His memberships included the Episcopal Church, Hot Springs Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Hot Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, South Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors, and National League of Cities.

He was preceded in death by Millie his dear wife of 52 years; his parents; sister Thelma Morningstar and his loving friend Fran Husdale.

Clint is survived by his son, Steve; daughters, Melinda Gregory and Shelley (Duaine) Carroll; 10 grandchildren; Mandy, Ryan, Taaron, Jesse, Chera, Mahryah, Julian, Ramsey, Jade and Rider; 13 great grandchildren: Katelyn, Gavin, Ethan, Sienna, Anthony, Megan, Dillon, Chance, Emiley, Molly, Andrew, Eli and Lucy; great-great-granddaughter, Audree; dear friend, Linda Iverson as well as his four legged companion and special friend Marky.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pierre and also, 1:00 p.m. MST, Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs. Inurnment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, Hot Springs.
