Cornelius Charles 'Charlie' Anderson, age 93, of Oral, SD, passed away March 2, 2015, at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD.
Charlie was born to Wallace Anderson and Myrtle Iva (Moore) Anderson on July 18, 1921, in Hay Springs NE. He graduated from Hay Springs High School. Charlie proudly served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945, as a gunnery instructor, in Wendover, UT. He flew fourteen missions from England to Germany and on May 19, 1944, tail gunner, Charlie Anderson was shot down over Berlin, Germany. He was captured by the Nazis, taken on the "Black March" and confined at Stalag Luft IV in northern Poland. Through a miracle of God he was liberated on May 17, 1945, weighing only 85 pounds. He returned home to his wife to be, Virginia Nystedt whom he married on September 22, 1945, at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX, Chapel 4. Charlie always said "I would have never made it a day without my devoted wife, Virginia". Charlie spent the next ten years on the family ranch near Hay Springs. He then moved on to unit 5 of the Angostura Irrigation District near the Cheyenne River in 1955, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Charlie became a devoted Christian during his POW years. He loved to laugh; visit and his greatest joys were working with livestock, gardening and being with people. He was a great advocate for veterans and POWs. Charlie was a member of The United Churches, VFW, American Legion, DAV, National Ex-POW and on July 4, 2003, was veteran of the day at Mt. Rushmore.
Charlie is survived by his wife Virginia of Oral, sons, Leslie Anderson, of Hay Spring, NE; Craig (Rene) Anderson, of Belle Fourche, SD; Bob Anderson of Oral; brother, Donald Anderson of Casper, WY; sisters, Francis Young of Hay Springs; Myrtle Schumway of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2015, at The United Churches with Pastor Clint Walker officiating. Interment will held 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2015, at the Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis, SD.
