Dale Lewis Hansen was born on August 13, 1940, to George and Hazel Hansen in Deadwood, SD. Dale attended grade school and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1958. He was an avid outdoorsman and excelled in both Football and Track & Field. After graduating from high school, Dale enlisted in the United States Army in 1959. He attended basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and later reported to Fort Knox, KY, and specialized in radio communications. In 1960, Dale was stationed in Korea as part of the Communications Division 1st Corp. During his deployment, Dale was assigned Honor Guard Duty. During his duty, he had the great privilege of meeting President Eisenhower and considered this one of the most memorable parts of his military service. Dale was honorably discharged from the Army in 1961.
While serving in the Army, Dale married his high school sweetheart, Judy Shama, on October 1, 1959. Dale and Judy welcomed four children, Bryan, Bradley, Brenda, and Brent, into their family. After returning from the Army, Dale began attending Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD. Dale worked to attain his teaching degree in Mathematics and Chemistry and held a full time job at the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, SD. Upon graduating from BHTC, Dale and Judy moved to Stratton, NE, where Dale held his first teaching job. In 1969, the family moved to Oxford, MS, and Dale attended Ole Miss and earned his Masters Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Dale and Judy relocated the family for a final time in 1971 to Hot Springs, SD, where they still reside. Dale taught a variety of subjects and enjoyed chasing his children around the state to watch them compete in various sports. While teaching in Hot Springs until retirement in 1991,
Dale and Judy met many lifelong friends and shared many memories and adventures while raising their families together. Dale was an outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Dale took great pride in his garden and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors. Dale was known for his dry sense of humor, his honesty and trustworthiness, and the wisdom he shared. Dale was a man of very few, but very wise words, and always listened more than he spoke. He was most proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He supported them in all of their endeavors and enjoyed talking about all of their successes.
Dale's legacy is carried on by his wife of 65 years, Judy Hansen, their children Bryan (Kim) Hansen of Bremerton, WA, Bradley Hansen of Hot Springs, SD, and Brenda Green of Buffalo, WY.
