Darrel Lynn 'Shaky' Sheets, age 82, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs.
Shaky was born in Burton, NE, to Glen and Hattie (Smothers) Sheets on November 19, 1928. He served in the US Navy from March 25, 1946, until January 13, 1953. He worked numerous jobs in California and South Dakota, such as breaking horses, putting up hay, and working with a seismograph crew. One of his favorite jobs was as a heavy equipment operator at Hills Material in Hot Springs.
Shaky married wife, Joan on January 5, 1970, and from that marriage their daughter Lynn was born. He was given the greatest gift of all, his three grandchildren, Melissa, born September 4, 1984; Daniel, born September 29, 1994, and Sara, born August 23, 1997.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen; mother, Hattie; brother, Bud; and sisters, Viola; Lois and Bertha.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; daughter, Lynn (Lucky) Taggart and grandchildren, Melissa; Daniel and Sara of Harrisburg, NE; sisters, Lola Smith of Hot Springs; Lucille (Dean) Sturdivant of Orrin Junction, WY; Norma Craft of Sioux City, IA; Martha VanAntwerp of Belle Fourche, SD; brothers, John (Josie) Asche of Borrego Springs, CA; Joe (Carol) Sheets of Stuart, OK; Earl Sheets of Hot Springs; Glenn 'Tuffy' (Pat) Sheets of Kent, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 26, 2011, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs with Pastor Peter Dahlberg officiating.
Interment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Shaky's name.
