Darreld H. McFadden, 88, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurcie State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD, where he had been a resident for the past 4 years.
His body is deeded to medical science at UND; a memorial service will be held in Wilton, ND in January.
Mr. McFadden was born September 12, 1918, in Punnichy, Saskatchewan, Canada to Fred and Margaret McFadden. He attended school in Wilton, ND, worked in the coal mines, CCC in Montana, and served in the military until he was honorably discharged in 1945. On August 3, 1947, he married Evelyn Flinn in Wilton. They lived in Iowa where Darreld was a heavy equipment operator until 1952, when they moved to Regan, ND and operated a locker plant. Later they lived in South Dakota where he worked on several ranches. From 1980 to '89 they lived at Brainerd Indian School, employed in maintenance. They then moved to Edgemont, where he lived until moving to the Veterans Home. Evelyn died in 1991.
Darreld is survived by one brother, Horace and Kathy McFadden, Vacaville, CA, sisters-in-law Elaine Flinn, Wilton, ND; Delores (Fred) Youssi and Nancy (Linwood) Taylor, all of Salt Lake City, UT; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister and two brothers.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at the Veterans Home for the wonderful care he received.
