Obituary

David "Hooter" Charles Fish, age 84, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at Monument Health Hospital in Custer, South Dakota.

Hooter was born on May 10, 1941, in Arlington, South Dakota, to Marion and Genevieve Fish. He proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1961. Upon returning to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Hooter married the love of his life, Mary "Jean" Jeanice Barnhouse, in 1961. Together, they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Hooter and Jean made their home in Arlington, South Dakota, on the family's original homestead, where they raised their five children. In 1985, after their youngest had left home, they moved to Custer, South Dakota. Upon retirement, they wintered in Uvalde, Texas for 16 years at Quail Springs RV Park, where they made many wonderful friends.

Hooter spent more than 20 years as a long-haul truck driver, traveling coast to coast. For the next 30 years, he worked for Bernie Busskohl and Gary Woodford, hauling heavy equipment throughout the Black Hills until his retirement. He took great pride in his work, his family, and his community.

Hooter is survived by his wife, Mary Jeanice Fish; 4 children Melodie (Grant) Gorton, Tami (Roger) Hall, and Todd (Tracy) Fish, and foster son Bill (Diane) Rumple; grandchildren Chris Gorton and Hillary Birdwell, Alex and Colt Palmer, Marcus and Lewis Hall, Joshua and Jordan Fish, and Bryce and Bret Rumple; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Carl Palmer.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been made in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer, South Dakota.
