David Louis Frybarger, 78, died at the Hospice House, in Rapid City, SD,
July 21, 2016, after a battle with colon cancer.
He was born April 7, 1938, on the family farm by Lake Wanalane near Pukwana, SD. He was the youngest of 5 surviving children. His parents were John L. and Dorothy G. (Clapper) Frybarger.
In the early 1950's, the family moved to Custer, SD, and engaged in ranching for a time. David graduated from Custer High School in 1957.
He served with the South Dakota National Guard and was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant with medals in marksmanship and artillery.
He married Mary E. McKenna, September 14, 1958. The couple had 3 children: Brian A. Frybarger (Laverne), Rapid City, SD; Cheryl K. Hodina (David), Rapid City, SD; and Tim D. Frybarger, Custer, SD.
The family moved back to Pukwana, SD, in 1963 where David worked for his
sister and brother-in-law on their farm. In 1970, the family returned to Custer,
SD, where David still lived before being admitted to the Hospice House.
David worked most of his life at area sawmills including Custer Lumber, where
he rose to foreman; the Hill City sawmill; and Linde's Sawmill at Custer.
David loved to try to learn to play various instruments including harmonica,
banjo, auto harp, ant mouth harp.
He loved to hunt, fish, read, garden (especially flowers), and he taught his
children to ride bikes and fly kites. He also taught us the value of hard-work
and dedication to family.
David's biggest passion and talent was woodworking. He started out doing
wood burning but soon found he had the patience and skill for scroll saw fret-
work, which was extremely intricate and time-consuming at times. He won
numerous purple ribbons at the Custer County Fair with his creations. He rarely sold his work, preferring to gift it to family and friends.
David was preceded in death by his wife in 2013, his parents, older brother; John "Bud" Frybarger, sisters; Dorothy Stemmerman, Bessie (Betsy) Delay, and Celia Eubanks; and 2 brothers in infancy.
He is survived by his 3 children, 5 grandsons, 2 grand-daughters, 10 great-
grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews including his nephew Bill DeLay, Parker, SD, with who he had a special bond.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service.
Funeral services will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 744 Harney Street, Custer, SD, Wednesday, July 27, 2016, 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Eric Obermann presiding.
Burial will follow at the Custer Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following
burial at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Senior Scholarship Fund at Our Redeemer
Lutheran Church, 744 Harney Street Custer; 5D, 57730.
The family urges everyone to please get a colonoscopy at the appropriate time
as it could save your life! We lost many more years with Dad because colon
cancer stole him away.'
