Obituary
Dewane Edward Stearns, age 78, passed away on June 28, 2014, at his home in Edgemont, SD.
Dewane was born September 2, 1935, in Edgemont to Edward and Ida (Heiser) Stearns. He grew up on the family ranch east of Provo where he learned to appreciate the rural lifestyle.
He attended Plains Valley rural school and Provo High School at Igloo.
Dewane had an independent, adventurous spirit and did what he wanted to do. As a young man, he worked several jobs including training horses, helping his Uncle Charlie during lambing season and ranch work for neighbors. He went to Wyoming to work in construction and participated in rodeos as a bareback and saddle bronc rider.
In 1961, he moved back to Edgemont to work for the uranium mill. In 1962, he married Flora Peters of Hot Springs. They purchased ranch property south of Edgemont and raised sheep and cattle. Dewane continued his employment at the uranium mill for 28 years, working various positions. He enjoyed operating heavy equipment. When the uranium mill closed in 1989, he became a full-time cattle rancher. Dewane and Flora expanded their operation when they purchased additional property from his Uncle Charlie.
He was currently a board member of the Fall River Conservation District.
Dewane loved to visit with people and travel. He was a rodeo fan and attended the National Finals Rodeo annually.
He is survived by wife, Flora Stearns of Edgemont, SD; children, Kathy (Bill) Cullen of Minnetonka, MN; Jerry (Melissa) Stearns of Edgemont; and Deann Stearns of Custer, SD; brother, Frank (Carol) Stearns of Cheyenne, WY; sister, Phyllis (Harry) Skea of Rapid City, SD; as well as five grandchildren, Renee Cullen; Amanda Cullen; Kaylen Stearns; Jared Stearns; and Jana Stearns. Dewane will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Assembly of God Church in Edgemont with Pastor K.C. Smith officiating.
Interment will be held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Horsehead Cemetery in Fall River County.
Memorials have been established in Dewane's name to benefit the Edgemont Ambulance Service, Edgemont Volunteer Fire Department and the Ardmore Fire Department.
