Don Lucien Smith, 62, of Hot Springs, SD died July 4, 2007 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD.
Don was born August 11, 1944 in Buffalo, SD to Clarence and Lois (Lamphere) Smith. Don attended school in Nisland and Vale, leaving high school to join the United States Navy from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1964. After his tour of duty, Don married Cindy Kayrasvopio. The couple had a daughter, Carmen, and worked for various local farm and ranch operations. Don later married Hazel Lawson and they had two children; daughter, Stacie, and son, John. Don loved the freedom of the open road and drove truck for various transport companies for many years until retiring due to health reasons.
Don loved to play board games and cards. He also followed college and professional sports closely and could always provide an update on the professional rodeo standings. The family is grateful that he was able to spend the last several months at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veterans Home in Hot Springs where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow veterans and caring staff.
Don is survived by his two daughters, Carmen (Erik) Gloekler of Greeley, CO; Stacie Campbell of Ft. Riley, KS; son, John (Billie Jo) Smith of Belle Fourche, SD; brothers, Darrell (Kathy) Smith of Rapid City, SD; James (Shirley) Smith of Virginia Beach, VA; sisters, Marjorie (Tom) Olson of Sturgis, SD; Joelen (Jerry) Knutson of Newell, SD; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews .
Committal services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at the Black Hills National Cemetery with Fr. Zandri officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Veterans Honored Interment, c/o Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veterans Home, 2500 Minnekahata Avenue, Hot Springs, SD 57747.
