Doris Lillian Monsen, age 84, joined our Eternal Lord in Heaven on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at her home in Custer, SD, from complications of temporal arteritis.
Doris was born October 12, 1926. To Gertrude and Joseph Whitehead in Isabel, SD. She graduated from Isabel High School in 1944 and attended nursing school in Aberdeen, SD. Doris worked at the Custer Sanator until she met and married the love of her life of 65 years, George Leo Monsen, II, on January 12, 1948. They lived in Custer where they raised their seven beautiful daughters. Doris and George owned and operated the Conee Corral Drive-inn Restaurant for seventeen years and Doris was the life of the party with her bright personality, singing, dancing, dressing for the holidays and her colorful hat collection. She always remembered everyone with cards. She loved children and everyone became special to her. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. Doris was a member of St. John's Alter Society, a CCD teacher and member of the Custer Women's Ecumenical Group.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Margaret and Grace Lucille; an older infant brother; her son, George Leo, III; granddaughters, Nicole and Emily; grandson, Christopher as well as several nieces and nephews.
Doris is survived by her loving husband, George Leo, II; daughters, Kathryn (Dean) Brumley of TX; Mary (Roy) Hendrickson of Custer; Georgene (Darrel) Teller of Rapid City, SD; Judi (Paul) Cole of MS; Dr. Joen (Tim) Painter of AZ; Jane Monsen of AZ; Laurie (Terry) Morgan of Pringle, SD; twelve grandchildren; 1 step granddaughter, fourteen great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; sisters, Alma Boeding of Armor, SD; Mary Jo Pelletier of OR; brother, Joseph Penn Whitehead of OR as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
Wake services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2011, with a pot luck supper to follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Kovarik officiating.
A memorial has been established in Doris' name in care of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, 2500 Minnekahta Avenue, Hot Springs, SD 57747.
