Obituary

Dorothy Helen Gordon, age 86, a lifelong resident of Hot Springs, SD, was called home to Heaven on November 9, 2010.

Dorothy was born April 8, 1924, to Rex and Rose (Mueksch) Sexton in Hot Springs. She grew up on the family farm located on Cascade Road, south of Hot Springs. Dorothy attended Sheps Canyon School for 8 years. She graduated from HSHS in 1942. She worked at the telephone company and the HiLo Grocery store.

She was united in marriage to William L. (Flash) Gordon on January 16, 1943. In 1946 her husband returned from serving overseas in WWII. They had four children, three daughters and a son.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dorothy took in laundry and ironing as well as daycare children. After the accidental death of her husband in 1957 she never remarried. She went to work in 1959 as a medical secretary for the Veterans Administration Medical Center Hot Springs and retired in 1989.

Dorothy was a long time member of the Church of Christ (Christian) in Hot Springs and was active for many years as a Sunday school teacher and church secretary.

Dorothy enjoyed being outside, where she spent summers caring for her garden, flowers, and lawn. She shared the bounty of her gardens with neighbors and friends. She was fiercely independent, but showed great capacity for generosity and love. She lived in the same house on Houston Avenue in Hot Springs for over 64 years.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Margaret Rose Gordon of Fridley MN, Lavona Galvin of Longmont CO, and Dennis (Sharalyn) Gordon of Rochester, MN; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A sister, Betty Rowe of Hot Springs, also survives as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957, an infant daughter, Glenda Mae in 1945, a brother George Sexton and a sister Mae Neeley.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. A reception will follow at the Mueller Center.
