Dorothy Ellen Lampert, age 85, of Custer, SD passed away Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Wedgwood Regional Senior Care in Custer.
Dorothy was born on June 12, 1922 at Manville, WY to Clarence and Lola (Beck) Patten. She grew up and attended both elementary and high school at Manville, graduating as Valedictorian in 1940. Dorothy attended the University of Wyoming for two years before her marriage to Jack Lampert in 1942 at Chadron, NE. To this union five sons were born, Jerry, Philip, David, Patrick and Robert.
Dorothy began a forty plus year teaching career at Dewey, SD, and then Pringle, SD before moving to Fairburn, SD with her five sons in 1957.
In 1959 Dorothy married Darrel Overlin. They moved to Rapid City in 1962 where she continued to teach. She taught at several elementary schools ending up at Canyon Lake Elementary School from where she retired in 1987. During her teaching career Dorothy acquired several degrees ranging from B.A. in Elementary Education to M.A in Education and School Administration, plus forty five hours toward her Doctorate.
She was a member of all the local and state teacher organizations; Alpha Delta Kappa and Royal Neighbors of America, Custer Senior Center and the Cold Springs Historical Society.
After her retirement from teaching and up until recently, Dorothy began a second career of serving the traveling public in Custer State Park. She worked at both the Coolidge General Store and the Blue Bell Store. She moved to Custer in 1996.
Among her survivors are her five sons and their families, Jerry Lampert of Bonita, CA; Philip Lampert of Custer; David Lampert of Seattle, WA; Patrick Lampert of Bluford, IL; Robert Lampert of Cheyenne, WY; two sisters, Mildred Wright of Story, WY; Estella Nelson of Jacksonville, OR; sixteen grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were both husbands, her parents, four brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2007, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at the First Baptist Church, Custer SD with Pastor Bill Savery officiating. Interment will follow at the Cold Springs Cemetery, near Pringle, SD.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Dorothy's name to benefit the Cold Springs Historical Society.
