Duane Michael Winter, Sr., 73, of Hot Springs, SD passed away May 8, 2007 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Duane was born January 7, 1934 in Ogema, MN to Michael and Elva (Johnson) Winter. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in Detroit Lakes, MN in 1952. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1958.
Duane worked as a forestry technician for the State of Minnesota from 1958 until 1967. He then was a land commissioner for the County of Becker, MN from 1967 until 1991. After this he worked as a consultant for a couple of years.
Duane helped organize the Youth Job Corps in Becker and Hubbard Counties in Minnesota from 1968 thru 1974. He was a church deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Southern Hills Evangelical Free Church.
Duane enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes and strawberries, woodworking, and landscaping around his home. He was also a volunteer at the Springs Senior Citizens Center.
Grateful to have shared Duane's life are his wife, Judith of Hot Springs; one son, Duane Winter, Jr. of Corvallis, OR; one daughter, Pamela (Lin) Harvy of Mena, AR; two brothers, Darrel Winter of Lake Park, MN; Rodney 'Tom' (Sue) Winter of Detroit Lakes, MN; three sisters, Shirley (Bob) McCarty of Sammamish, WA; Marjo Birdsall of FL; Eloise (Don) Dovre of Detroit Lakes, MN and two grandchildren.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald, and one sister, Betty Toman.
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Southern Hills Evangelical Free Church in Hot Springs with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating.
Interment Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, May14, 2007 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Military Honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.
