Dulia Gertrude Kramer, age 74, of Hot Springs, died October 29, 2006 at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, SD. She died on her beloved husband, Paul's, birthday, with her family surrounding her after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Dulia was born September 17, 1932 in Mentor, Minnesota to Edward R. Williams, Sr. and Dulia Ann Barrette. She attended Iowa Public School until 1942, transferred to a Hawthorne, NV school in 1943 and completed the school year in Igloo, SD. She then attended school in Igloo until 1950 and graduated from Sidney, NE High School in 1951 with Honors.
Dulia had the privilege of working in many different fields. Her first job was at the Wind Cave restaurant during the summer of 1950. Her duties included dishwasher, salad maker and sandwich maker. After moving to Sidney, NE she took employment with Sioux Ordnance Depot from September 1951 to October 1954 as an ammunition handler, ammunition checker, explosive operator and timekeeper. While living in Sidney she also worked as a bookkeeper for JI Case Company, the Pontiac Dealership and West Nebraska Express (WNX). Her duties at WNX also included a teletype operator.
Dulia worked in oil fields as roughneck and truck driver in the 1950's; waited tables and cooked at various cafes in South Dakota and Nebraska. She bartended in Hot Springs for H.L. Wood; drove taxi; kept books; served as assistant bus depot ticket and freight agent. She was a nursing assistant at the South Dakota Veterans Home, Lutheran Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. After hurting her back from lifting a patient, Dulia transferred into administration and served as a telephone operator, file clerk, reproduction clerk, beneficiary travel clerk, employee health clerk, death details clerk, and admissions/eligibility clerk. Dulia worked the VAMC from March 1977 to her retirement on May 1, 1998.
She was a member of the SD Emergency Medical Technicians Association whom she was the State President of for two years and State Secretary for four years. She was also a member of the Hot Springs Ambulance Service for six years and the Hot Springs Ambulance District Board. She received the VIC Steffen Award.
Dulia enjoys people, reading mystery novels, television, and spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed traveling to visit relatives and friends in South Dakota and surrounding states.
She is survived by her five children; son, Kevin Joseph Moren (Lynette Gohsman) of Keystone, SD; their children, Melissa Dawn Moren of Hot Springs, SD; Jami Christine Hamaker Moren of Hot Springs, SD; Keauna Lynn Moren, Kyle Joseph Moren, Angela Lynn Merrill and Kimberly Beth Merrill all of Keystone, SD; and their grandchild and Landyn John Hamilton; son, Larry Lee Berens of Lava Hot Springs, ID; his children, Angel Marie Berens of Germany; Larry Lee Berens, Jr. of Lincoln, NE; his grandchildren, Brandon Eugene Berens; Cole Reese Simmons; daughter, Cheryl Ann (Thomas) Lathrop of Hot Springs, SD; their children, Stacy Lynn Herman Rice of Custer, SD; Steven Allen Herman of Keystone, SD; Matthew Paul Lathrop of Hot Springs, SD; their grandchildren, Chandler Louis Rice; Taylor David Rice; daughter, Kathy Marie Peacock (Lonnie Wise) of Plainville, KS; their children, Heather Lynne Berens of Russell, KS; Stephanie Renee Berens Hazlett of Crestwood, KY; their grandchildren, Harley Lewis Berens Phillip Robert Hazlett; Roseanne Marie Hazlett; daughter, Julie Lynn Fleharty of Lava Hot Springs, ID; her children, Shawn Michael Fleharty of Mountain Home, ID; Christopher Adam Fleharty of Mountain Home, ID; Paul Andrew Fleharty of Hot Springs, SD; four brothers, Edward Williams of Custer, SD; Raymond Hephner of Chilton, WI; Philip Hephner of Hilbert, WI; Peter Pohl of Forest Lake, MN; sister, Mary Jane Bowe of Hilbert, WI; sister-in-law, Beverly Austin of Sioux Falls, SD;
A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am, Thursday, November 2, 2006 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD with Father Tierney officiating. Interment will follow at the Pringle Cemetery in Pringle, SD.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Dulia's name to benefit the Hot Springs Ambulance Service.
