Earl Stombaugh, age 92, of Buffalo Gap, SD, passed away January 4, 2016, at the Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs, SD.
Earl was born July 9, 1923, in Frontier County, NE, to Clifford and Helen "Heater" Stombaugh. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Earl married Betty Jean Kiesel on August 27, 1947; she passed away in January 1990. He then married Judy Reynolds in 1995. Earl enjoyed farming-raising milk cows, pigs, and later beef cattle. He was an expert welder, mechanic and machinist.
Earl served on the Custer County Weed Board, the Angostura Irrigation District Board, and Buffalo Gap Methodist Church Board. He was also an active member of the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department NFO, VFW, and American Legion. He also enjoyed speaking to those who suffer from Crohn's disease. Earl's hobbies were auctions, old cars and trucks, collecting pocket watches, and collecting tools. He will be remembered as an honest, caring, hardworking and forthrightness.
Earl is survived by his wife, Judy Stombaugh of Huron, SD; sons, Terry (Joy) Stombaugh of Buffalo Gap; Randy (Gwen) Stombaugh of Buffalo Gap; Grant (Eun-Ju) Stombaugh of Seoul, S. Korea; adopted daughter, Sharon (Harvey) Tschetter of Hitchcock, SD; brothers, Clyde (LaVida) Stombaugh of Cozad, NE; Jay (Sharon) Stombaugh of Lexington, NE; sister, June Easterday of Elwood, NE; 4 grandsons, Charles, Jason, Tony, Derek; 3 granddaughters, Carolin, Wendy, Tara; and numerous great grandchild.
Preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Kiesel; parents, Clifford and Helen Stombaugh; sisters, Verna, Lila, Opal; and brother, Glen.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2016, at the Prairie View Methodist Church near Smithwick, SD, with Pastor Mark Johnsen officiating. Interment will follow at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery near Buffalo Gap with Military Honors.
A memorial has been established in Earl's name to benefit the Alzheimer's Research Unit at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, MN.
