Obituary

Earl Marlin White, age 90, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away January 16, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hot Springs.

Earl was born August 11, 1921, in White River, SD, to Leslie and Pearl (Chambers) White. He moved with his family north of Buffalo Gap, SD. He attended a country school nearby and then two years high school in Buffalo Gap. He joined the United States Army October 12, 1942 and became an engineer serving his country during World War II, until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1946. He was stationed in France, Belgium and Germany.

He married Ila Williams in 1945, to this union three sons were born, Marlin, Steven and Earl 'Bud'.
Earl worked for 20 years for Summit Construction and 10 years for Barber Transport. Upon retirement he and Ila resided in Buffalo Gap before moving to Hot Springs.

Earl's greatest passion along with all his family and friends was playing cards. At the State Veterans Home he played cards at least four days a week, and more when someone challenged him to a game of cribbage. Earl was a life member of the American Legion Post 303 of Hermosa. One of the highlights of his life was a trip to Washington DC to see the World War II Memorial.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Ila of Hot Springs; three sons, Marlin (Nancy) White of Fuquay-Varina, NC; Steven (Tammy) White of Buffalo Gap, SD; Earl 'Bud' White of Fairburn, SD; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Louis, Robert, Leslie and Fred; and grandson, Matthew.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2012, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home Auditorium in Hot Springs with Pastor Gary Jacobson officiating. Interment will follow at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery near Buffalo Gap.
