Obituary

Edith 'Avo' Carroll, age 91, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2014, at the Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Avo was born April 20, 1922, in Smith, Alberta, Canada, to John Milton and Edith Julia Riggins. She grew up in Canada and Montana, graduated at age 16 from Whitefish, MT High School in 1938. Avo had a live-long love of reading, both prose and poetry, she even had her original poems published.

She married L. Wray Carroll on June 15, 1943, bearing three daughters. Her husband was a hydroelectric engineer living near the Missouri River Dam System projects for Fort Peck, MT, Pickstown, and Yankton, SD. During these years she was active in her church, sewing club, girl scouts, and caring as an engineers' wife. She enjoyed sewing beautiful dresses for her three daughters while also working part-time as a secretary, but her greatest joy was always her family.

In 1969 she moved to Golden, CO, where she lived for 40 years. She worked at Golden Gate Youth Camp until she retired at age 65. She then moved to Hot Springs in 2010, living at Brookside until her move to Castle Manor last October.

Avo is survived by her three daughters, Sheila (Don) Devries of Hot Springs; Pamela Hancock of Telluride, CO; Darla Jenkins of Pueblo, CO; brother, Lloyd Riggins of Sidney, MT; grandchildren, Robin (Todd) Wynia and daughters Katie and Megan of Hot Springs; Kristin (Andreas) Frackowiak and daughters Elaine and Lorelei of Denver, CO; Jonathan (Elisa) Hancock and daughter Amalia of Faenza, Italy; Jason (Erin Thompson) Hancock of San Francisco, CA; Joshua (Lisa) Hancock and children Dominick, Theo, Sophie and Nina of Bush Prairie, WA; Sarah Hancock of San Francisco, CA; including many nieces and nephews and a special niece and name-sake, Avo Riggins O'Brian of Buffalo, NY.

Private family services will be held in Colorado at a later date.
