IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Enid Lucille
Mcclure
December 2, 1924 – February 18, 2020
Enid Lucille (Elston) McClure, age 95, passed away February 18, 2020 at Pine Hills Assisted Living Center in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Dear daughter of the late Esther and Ora Elston, beloved wife of the late Shirley McClure and loving mother to Duane McClure, Randall (Joan) McClure and Gary (Jan) McClure passed peacefully into the arms of her God and savior Jesus Christ while surrounded by her loving family.
Enid was born near Enid, Oklahoma and later relocated with her family to South Dakota. She graduated high school May 26th, 1943 and that same year challenged the state certification testing and obtained her teaching certificate. Enid began teaching at the Erskine country school. This is where her love story began. One of the local boys (Shirley McClure) wanted to meet her and so he and some buddies developed a plan to bring supplies to the new school teacher. Shirley and Enid began dating and later married October 8th, 1945. They resided at the Frank Gilchrist ranch (Shirley's uncle) near Minnekahta Junction and worked on the ranch until Frank passed away. They then purchased the ranch and continued to build their home and family.
Enid enjoyed her ranch life and her family. The peace and quiet of the country soothed her soul. She adored the outdoors and was a renowned markswoman in her day. She never missed those coyotes when she had her rifle handy. She had a green thumb like no other. Her ability to raise african violets, peonies, and tiger lillies was unprecedented. Walks out on the countryside, allowed for teaching opportunities to each and every one of her grandchildren. Blue bells, shooting stars, honeysuckle and crocus flowers littered the hillsides and each grandchild was tasked at some time or another with making sure she had some for the kitchen table. Thinking back, that may have been her way of getting us out of the house but, who is to say.
Enid also enjoyed cooking and baking. No one ever went hungry at her house. Her recipes are still enjoyed at each family get-together and holiday and will for years to come. One other thing Enid loved; was to shop. From K-mart and Pamida to Shopko to HSN and QVC a good deal was never bypassed. Her shopping savvy will surely be missed.
Enid was preceded in death by her parents, her loving spouse, and her brother. She is survived by her 3 sons; Duane, Randall (Joan), Gary (Jan), eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
