Obituary

Esther Herrmann Lacey passed away on August 24, 2016, at Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer, SD, at the age of 98.

Esther was born May 18, 1918 on the family farm near Carter, SD. She was the ninth of thirteen children born to John and Christina Herrmann.

At the age of 17, she met Edward John Lacey in Roundup, MT, while she was there caring for her sister- in-law. They were married in November 1935, and made their home in Roundup. Their daughter, JoAnn, was born there on June 29, 1936, and their son, Ronnie, was born in Billings, MT, on April 18, 1947. The Lacey family moved to Sheridan, WY in 1948, and lived there until 1952, when they moved to Custer, SD. Esther worked at the Mica Depot, C&M Jewelry Company and retired from Custer State Hospital in 1980.

Esther was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer for 64 years. She belonged to Custer VFW Auxiliary and was an active member of the Custer Lions Club and a volunteer at the 1881 Courthouse Museum.

Esther was a resident of Rose Haven for 2 years and resided the past 6 years at Custer Regional Senior Care. She was known for her fiery personality and was well regarded by her caretakers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; son-in-law, Bobby Evans; great-granddaughter, Casey Crane; and ten brothers and sisters.

Esther is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Evans of Custer; her son, Ronnie (Judy) of Custer, three grandchildren; Greg (Carol) Evans of Pierre; Terri (Ed) Meierkort of Celebration, FL; Ryan (Deborah)Lacey of Cheyenne, WY; two sisters, Violet of CA and Bernice of WA; five great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer, SD.
