Ethel Mary Morse was born August 20, 1916, in Rockham, SD to Louis and Edith (Stahl) Davis. As a child she moved to Redfield where she attended grade school and high school. Following high school, she completed Business College in Aberdeen and returned to Redfield, finding work with a federal agency. Ethel married her high school sweetheart Stanley Morse in 1937.
During the early years of married life Ethel and her husband moved several times, accommodating Stan's work. They lived in Sioux Falls and Madison, where daughter Kay was born. Following a short stay in Ironwood, MI. they relocated to Watertown. The next move took them all the way to Santa Monica, CA.
In Santa Monica Ethel began a long career with the public school system. She was the office manager at both Santa Monica High School and Lincoln Junior High School. Ethel was known for being a good listener; both students and staff would often come to talk out a problem or just visit, they always left feeling better.
Ethel was an active member of the Kiwani Anne's and served as president of the group. She was a fantastic cook and a gracious hostess, her circle of friends was a large one that kept growing with every move. She loved to play bridge and was an avid golfer. After retiring Ethel and her husband moved to Fountain Valley, CA. to be near their daughter's family.
In 2003, Ethel and Stan moved to the Custer area to the home of daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Charles Hoag. On August 1, 2007 she and her husband celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends.
Ethel passed away at home on Sunday, December 16th. She was 91. Ethel is survived by her husband Stan of Custer; daughter, Kay (Charles) Hoag of Custer; grandson, Dan Hoag of Dallas, TX; granddaughter, Starr Ann Hoag of Wichita, KS. She is further survived by two brothers, Louis Davis of Fresno, CA and Clark Davis of Redfield; three sisters, Mavis Schroeder of Redfield; Darlene Collins of Port Charlotte, FL; Lee Howard of Oskaloosa, IA. and many nieces and nephews who will miss her.
Ethel will be remembered as a loving and giving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend who enjoyed her life to the fullest and enriched the lives of all those who knew and loved her.
There will be a private graveside memorial service held in Redfield in the Spring.
