Everett T. Gillis, 102, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away February 6, 2010, at the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs.
Everett was born on April 23, 1907, in the "middle of Fall River County". He spent all but a few years right in Fall River County. He attended grade school at Fairview School on Sorghum Flat and then graduated from the four-year course at the School of Agriculture in Brookings, SD, where he received his high school education and a degree in agriculture. Everett married Mabel Yearous, a classmate at the School of Agriculture. They lived in Rapid City for a short time before moving back to Hot Springs. To this union four daughters; Daryle, Donna, Myrna and Mavis were born.
Everett took a position with the Post Office in Hot Springs in 1936, first as a substitute, then as a clerk and finally as a rural carrier. He retired in 1970. After his retirement, Everett and Mabel traveled to forty-seven different states, including Alaska and Hawaii.
Everett was active in The United Churches, the Historical Society, the IOOF Lodge and Encampment, the Jeddiah Smith Corral of Westerners, NARFE and a lifetime member of the Senior Citizens. He spent many hours to help restore and upgrade the old grade school building into the Fall River Museum and was a great source of Historical information about the surrounding area for many years.
Everett is survived by four daughters, Daryle Willmott of Marshalltown, IA; Donna C. (Bud) Jenniges of Hot Springs; Myrna Halls of Hot Springs; Mavis Olstad of Hot Springs, twenty grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren and nineteen great-great grandchildren.
