Flora Alice Foster, age 92, of Hot Springs, S.D., died February 8, 2014 at the Hospice House in Rapid City, S.D.
Flora was born on October 30, 1921 in Cherry County Nebraska to Dewey and Hyacinth (Hobson) Shelbourn. She grew up one of six near Valentine, Nebraska. Flora graduated from high school in Valentine. On January 4, 1948, she married Willard Foster. In 1949 a son Leroy was born, and in 1950 Vernon came along.
In 1950, the family moved to the Nebraska/South Dakota state line where they farmed and ranched. In 1955 the family of four moved to the Angostura Irrigation Project, east of Oral, S.D. where Willard and Flora proceeded to spend a lifetime building and working their place. Flora was very active in her sons lives and was Willard's right-hand in running the farm.
She was a very active member of the United Methodist Church most of her life and delighted in catching up with everyone at Sunday services. When she and Willard retired from farming and ranching, they thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. on bus tours and visiting family. In fact, Flora was planning to depart for Hawaii in a few weeks for her annual trip. She also was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed raising flowers.
Flora was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loyal friend and neighbor. She cherished all who were part of her life and especially held dear her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a phenomenal woman with sparkling blue eyes and an enduring spirit has left us, but we will forever be blessed with the memories of her faithful phone calls and attention to detail. May her strength, perseverance and can-do attitude be an inspiration to us all.
Survivors include her son, Leroy (Charlene) Foster of Ft. Pierre; sister, Elsie Shelbourn of Englewood, C.O., brother, Alvin (Diane) Shelbourn of Highlands Ranch, C.O.; grandchildren, April (Matt) Smart and David Foster of Pierre, S.D.; Frank (Linda) Foster of New Underwood, S.D.; and Forrest Foster of Rapid City, S.D.; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Lexi Foster.
Flora was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Albert, brother, Desmond, brother, Dean, sister, Almira, husband, Willard, and son Vernon.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Prairie View United Methodist Church in Smithwick, SD with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services.
