IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florence I.
Mayer
April 14, 1932 – December 23, 2018
Florence Mayer (Butler) was born on April 14, 1932. She grew up in Yankton, SD, where she
finished her college degree in education. She became a teacher and moved to Roscoe, SD, where
she met the love of her life, Franklin Mayer. They were married and had four children: Karen,
Mike, David and Gary.
They started their life together on a small farm in Roscoe and had many friends. She worked as
a teacher for many years and her husband ran the farm and worked part time at a hardware store.
In 1974, they moved to Custer, SD, and started a Plumbing shop. She worked along with her
husband and two children (Mike and David) in the front office. David and Mike later took
over the business when they retired.
After retiring, Florence and Franklin remained in Custer, SD, were they were close to family and
friends. Her husband passed away on November 9, 2010. Florence started up some new hobbies
of painting and loved to put puzzles together while enjoying time with her family. On December
23, 2018, Florence passed quietly in her sleep.
Florence and Franklin loved to travel. They took their young family camping and on long family
vacations in the car. Later on, they purchased a small camper and traveled around the country.
Florence was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother to the large family that was
started by her and Franklin. She was our inspiration, our guide, our counselor, and the person we
all knew we could turn to in times of need.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin; her parents, Vincent and Josephine;
sister, Jean; brother, Duane; and two grandchildren, Dusty and Amanda.
She is survived by her four children, a daughter, Karen Holloway; three sons, Michael (Debra), David
(Tori) and Gary (Ilona) Mayer; her sister, Geri Trost; five grandchildren, Christopher; Tyrell; Nichole; Travis and Brittany; as well as six great grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
