Obituary

Francis Jerke departed to meet his Savior on January 3, 2012. He has been reunited in heaven with those who have gone before us.

Francis was born the last of 4 children to August & Wilhelmina "Minnie" Jerke in Carter, SD on August 21, 1932. Upon returning from his service in the Korean War, Francis carried on the family farm/ranch with his brother; Clarence. Upon retiring from the farm/ranch, he moved to Custer where he selflessly took care of his mother enabling her to live at home until her passing at the age of 101.

Francis was talented in many areas and often shared these talents with those he loved. He was a master carpenter and woodworker. Many of his family & friends will remember the wooden toys, puzzles, jewelry boxes and various other items he crafted with much time and love. He also enjoyed gardening. And when the gardening season was over, he had plenty of interests which kept him busy inside. One of those was wine-making and baking. Many would agree he made the best chokecherry wine. Francis baked his own bread and there were always home-made cookies in the jar. A special gift Francis had was working with animals; especially dogs. Over the years, many dogs would share his life and he had an amazing ability to train them with ease.

His strong faith in the Lord guided Francis throughout his life. Francis is survived by his brother, Clarence Jerke, Hot Springs, SD; his sister, Irene Anderson, Kansas City, MO; 9 nieces & nephews and 9 great nieces & nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Florence; and a great niece, Anna Marie Jerke.

Special thanks and gratitude to the staff at the State Veterans Hospital/Clinic in Hot Springs & Ft. Meade for their excellent care of Francis. Thanks also to Rapid City medical staff, hospitals and clinics.

Visitation will be at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer, Thursday, Jan. 5th from 5pm to 7pm.

Funeral services will be at 10am, Friday Jan. 6th at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer, with burial service at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
