Franklin D. Mayer, age 77, of Custer, SD, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Custer Regional Hospital.
He was born June 1, 1933, on the home farm in Edmonds County, SD, as the fifth child of Jacob J. and Anna Mary (Nehlich) Mayer. On December 28, 1953, he married Florence Butler in Aberdeen, SD. Franklin worked most of his life as a farmer near Roscoe, SD. After moving to the Black Hills in 1974, he founded and owned Mayer Plumbing until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends traveling, camping, hunting, and fishing.
Franklin is survived by his wife Florence, a daughter Karen Holloway; three sons, Michael (Debra), David (Tori) all of Custer, SD; and Gary (Illona) of Orlando, FL; one sister, Corneila Ellwein of Ipswich, SD; one brother Howard (Carole) of Mansfield, SD; six grandchildren: Christopher, Nichole, Tyrell, Amanda, Travis, and Brittany; as well as his two great-grandchildren Anton and Anastie. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Elmer and Harold; as well as his grandson Dustin Goodro.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
