Obituary

Fredrick Michael 'Fred' Walgren, 92, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away December 25, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs. He was born December 18th, 1920, in Hay Springs, NE, to Fredrick Michael and Margaret (Linden) Walgren, Sr. where he was raised on a family farm/ranch.

Fred proudly served in the United States Navy from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946, as a Radioman on the seaplane tender St. George in the South Pacific.

After his service in WWII, he married Rushville, NE, native Pauline Eckerle in Washington DC where he worked for the FBI in the Fingerprinting Dept. He then attended Broadcasting school in Kansas City, KS, then spent the next 22 years in Radio Broadcasting. He moved his family to Hot Springs in 1958, where he built and operated the radio station KOBH - Kall Of the Black Hills, till 1970. He then helped install/construct the Cable TV system throughout the Black Hills and operated/managed the Hot Springs/Edgemont/Custer divisions until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of the VFW, Elks Club, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce & City Council. He and Pauline were avid golfers and bowlers and were members of multiple leagues in each sport. He was also an active member of the Catholic Church and a dedicated husband and father.

Wake services will be held at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2012, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2012, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

Fred is survived by his son, Sheldon 'Butch' (Cindy) Walgren of Burlington, KS; two daughters, Debra Johnston of Hot Springs; Paula (Scott) Stackhouse of Cedar Falls, IA; brother, LaVern (Mary) Walgren of
Puyallup, WA; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Margaret; wife, Pauline; son, Craig, brother, William and sister, Margret Kirk.
