Obituary

Garold 'Bud' Slagel, 90, of Madison, SD and formerly of Hot Springs, SD died Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Bud lived a very good life. He spent his childhood in Bonesteel, Platte and Madison, SD, graduating from high school at Madison. Bud proudly served with the Army 109th Engineers in Ireland, Africa and Italy during World War II. Shortly after returning from the war he met and married Olga Norup. Bud and Olga lived, and began their family in Madison SD, California and Nebraska before moving to Hot Springs, SD in 1959. In Hot Springs, Bud worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital as a machinist until his retirement in 1976. No one enjoyed their retirement like Bud. He had many, many friends in Hot Springs and loved sharing coffee and stories with them at the local restaurants. He also collected radios, cameras and other things old and spent hours tinkering with them in his shop, one of the finest private machine shops in Hot Springs.

After 49 years of marriage Bud lost his wife, Olga, in 1996. He could not bear living alone and later married Betty Barrela, a long time family friend. Bud spent ten loving years with Betty, renewing old friendships and making new friendships in Madison until his death.

Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Olga; his second wife, Betty; his father and mother, Adam and Iola, and sister, Betty (Virgil) Redfield.

He is survived by three children, Dianne (Gary) Carter of Kennett, MO; Kay (Gary) Whiting of Falcon, CO; Gary (Terry) Slagel of Hot Springs; one step-daughter, Linda (Don) Greyson of Madison; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bud was loved and will be missed by many.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs with Pastor Peter Dahlberg officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

A memorial has been established in Bud's name to benefit the Hot Springs Library.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences may be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
