Gary Carr of Custer, SD (originally from Gladwin, Michigan), passed away August 25, 2026, before the world was ready, at the age of 44.

Although his unique light is no longer earth-side, it still glows within all who loved him and the countless lives he touched.

Deuteronomy 15:11: "For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, 'You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land."

Gary lived by this passage—one of his favorites—and earned the nickname “Doc” from his two tours as a Navy Corpsman in Iraq. Caring for others was ingrained into who he was, which led the nickname to stick forever.

Gary always had wild, amazing stories to tell—proof that he lived a rich life. From working as a cemetery superintendent to playing football in Ireland and hunting baboons in Africa, he was never afraid to be new at something.

His laughter surely still rings in the ears of every client he had while practicing as a barber in both Michigan and the beautiful shop he opened in Custer: A Dude’s Place.

Gary had a profound love for his family, especially his sons, Grant, Gaelin, and Gariadh Óg, as well as his nieces and nephews. He also cared deeply for his fellow veterans and the countless friends he made along the way.

You could usually find him listening to music that transcended all genres, volunteering in the community, or doing something outdoors — with his beloved dog, Roxy, by his side.

He lived his life with the beautiful spirit of what he called a wise fool, refusing to be bound by conventional rules, always seeking joy, and reminding everyone around him to laugh louder and love harder.

Gary is survived by his sons Grant, Gaelin, and Gariadh Óg, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim and Fern Campbell and Grandma and Poppy Carr; mother and stepfather, Joseph and Terry Andrews; and his brother, Jerry.

A private burial will take place in Gladwin, MI.

A Celebration of Life will take place 3-7 p.m., Saturday Oct. 24, 2026 at VFW Post #3442 in Custer (721 Mt. Rushmore Rd.).

A Michigan celebration is being planned for August 2027.
