Gary Van Salverson, 74, of Hot Springs, SD passed away November 16, 2021, at Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Boise, ID.
Gary has called the Black Hills his home for most of his life. He was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1946 and grew up on a dairy farm. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War Era from 1968-1972. His primary military occupational specialties involved support and service on Minuteman Missiles and missile sites and later, the B-1 bomber aircraft at Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Rapid City. After his enlisted years, he worked a number of different industrial jobs and eventually returned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, as a civilian employee. He serviced and supported B-1 bombers for the remainder of his working career, until his retirement.
Gary always enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. He attended as many dirt track car races as possible, especially sprint cars. He also loved spending time outdoors, riding his four wheeler around his property and going for drives in the Black Hills to enjoy nature. He regularly attended church in Hot Springs and you could often find him at a Bible study, at lunch with friends "solving" the world's problems, or hiring someone in need, to help do work on his land. For entertainment, if he wasn't at the race track or church, he would enjoy time with close friends, attending live western and bluegrass music performances by Black Hills area musicians.
Gary is survived by his two children, Wade (Yuting) Salverson and grandchildren Priscilla, Isaac and Benjamin of Boise, ID and Brandie (Joe) Rainboth and grandchildren Lainey and Owen of Spearfish, SD; sister, Sharon (Chuck) Harrison and family of Plymouth, Wisconsin.
He was a humble and gentle spirit, with a mountain of faith. He will be deeply missed.
The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you: The Lord lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.
