Obituary

Gerald Reed Nowlan, age 85, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away February 24, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs.

Gerald was born October 30, 1923 to Hazel and Carl Nowlan in Winner, SD. The family moved to a ranch in the Chadron, NE area in 1926. He attended grade school at a one room country school and graduated from Chadron High School in 1941. On December 7, 1942 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was assigned to the 3rd Amtrac Battalion. They were on New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Emirau, Guam and Iwo Jima. He was hospitalized at Pearl Harbor for surgery. On February 4, 1946 he received his discharge. He was on the Nebraska State Patrol from 1946 until 1948, working out of the Omaha Office.

On May 3, 1947 he married Phyllis Seaman. They later moved back to the ranch where they remained until health problems in 1954. He worked for Sidles Automotive for many years as a salesman and then store manager. In 1971 he bought Fall River Auto Supply in Hot Springs, SD. He continued with the business until his retirement in 1991.

Gerald was a member and served on various committees of the United Churches. He was a member and past master of Samaritan Lodge 158, Chadron, NE and past master of Harmony Lodge 110, Hot Springs, Naja Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and Elks Lodge.

Golfing and watching his grandsons participate in sports kept him happy in his retirement years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and sister.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Hot Springs; son, Richard 'Rocky' Nowlan of Hot Springs; two brothers, Bill (Ava) Nowlan of El Dorado Springs, MO; Gary (Connie) Nowlan of Boulder, CO; two sisters, Dee Duff (Dan) of Boulder, CO; Shirley Ahrens of Chadron, NE; three grandchildren, Abraham Nowlan of Denver, CO; Joshua Nowlan of Denver, CO; Zachariah (Linda) Nowlan of Oklahoma City, OK; and three great-grandchildren, Keysha; Eric and Ryan.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2009 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2009 at United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating. Interment will be held 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2009 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.

A memorial has been established in Gerald's name to benefit the United Churches Memorial Fund.
