Obituary

Glen Roy Smith, age 91, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away October 5, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs.

Glen was born on April 30, 1922, in Fairburn, SD, the son of Furman and Merle (Havens) Smith. He had two sisters, Neva and Nelda. Glen attended school through the 8th grade at the Downen School and graduated from Fairburn High School. With the exception of his military service and the last three years in Hot Springs, Glen lived his entire life in the Buffalo Gap/Fairburn Area. He served in the US Navy, in the Pacific, during WWII and was in the Seabees as a heavy equipment operator. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

On June 2, 1949, Glen married Vivian Degnan Mallory of Buffalo Gap. In addition to his ranch work, Glen held several other jobs throughout his life. He was a heavy equipment operator on the road crew who built Highway 79; he later worked as a security guard at a missile base outside Hermosa, and he was employed at the Dietetics Dept. at the Hot Springs VA until his retirement in 1991.

Glen was a 70-year member of I.O.O.F. Lodge #235 (Fairburn); a 63-year Life Member of Hot Springs Elk Lodge #1751; a member of the VFW Post #1640 in Hot Springs; and a member of the American Legion Post #303 in Hermosa. Glen was a very active member of the Fairburn Historical Society and was always ready to help with projects at the at the group's museum in the old school building in Fairburn. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Buffalo Gap until the church's closing. He served as senior warden for several years. Glen loved playing cards, traveling and fishing. In his younger days he was an avid bowler, bowling in two to three leagues a week. Glen spent his last year and one-half living at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, and he was so grateful for the wonderful care and friendship he found there.

Glen was a very kind man who always found time to help his family, friends and neighbors in any way he could. He was very skilled at building or repairing machines or equipment and prided himself on being able to get a "few more good years" out of an aging machine.

Survivors include his daughter, Glenda (Robert) Alcorn of Gordon, NE; son, Douglas Mallory of Hot Springs; granddaughter, Capt. Christina Pruitt DDS (Chase) of Papillion, NE; grandsons, Ryan (Jill) Alcorn of Rushville, NE; Douglas M. Mallory of Dallas, TX; William (Cassandra) Mallory of Midlothian, TX; sister, Nelda Carroll of Fairburn, SD; four great grandchildren and many dearly loved nephews and nieces including Terry (Anita) Gallentine of River Falls, WI; and Evan (Roberta) Gallentine of Rapid City,SD.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2013, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs with Fr. Claude Vershure officiating. Interment will follow at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery near Buffalo Gap, SD.
