Springs, SD.
Goldie was born April 26, 1925, in Plankinton, SD, to Willis Cleo (Bill) and Winifred (Edmonds)
Sumners. Goldie was the oldest of 14 siblings. When Goldie was two years old, the family
relocated to a farm near White River, SD. Goldie and her sisters helped with the barnyard
chores traditionally done by male farm hands. Goldie drove a John Deere tractor.
Goldie loved to read books in her spare time. She took a few piano lessons and enjoyed playing
the piano. She helped her Mother care for the younger children, although she much preferred
being outside with her Dad. She adored her Dad.
Goldie attended school in White River, transferring to Murdo, SD to attend high school. She
graduated May 12 as valedictorian - Class of 1944. That same day, Goldie and her handsome
classmate and neighbor, Lloyd Reichardt, eloped. They were married in Pierre, SD in the
afternoon and attended the high school graduation ceremony that evening. Their early married
life was spent on a farm near White River. Goldie was an excellent cook. One of the family's
favorite meals was chicken and homemade noodles.
In 1952, Goldie and Lloyd and their four children moved to Edgemont, SD. Lloyd went to work
at the Black Hills Army Depot, Igloo, SD. He worked nights at the W & W Body Shop and bought
the business in 1954. When her youngest child, Larry, started school, Goldie went to work as
Edgemont City Auditor for Mayor Lewis Young. A few years later Goldie worked part time at Mr.
Young's real estate/insurance office.
In 1967, Goldie and Lloyd bought the Chevrolet dealership in Edgemont. Goldie was an active
partner in the businesses they owned in Edgemont and Hot Springs, including auto parts and R
& S Motors. Goldie was very active in both communities, serving three terms as Edgemont
Chamber of Commerce President. She was also a member of the Business and Professional
Women; Tuesday Study Club; Hesperian Rebekah Lodge # 34; Fall River County Republicans;
South Dakota Republican Women; the Congregational Church as well as several Fall River
County boards.
Goldie and Lloyd were winners of numerous Chevrolet sales contests and awards. They won all
expense paid trips to Switzerland, Monaco, and Hawaii, to name a few. They enjoyed socializing
with friends and family, especially at Angostura Lake, their home away from home.
