Gordon Anthony Kury, age 62, died at home in Custer, SD, on Monday July 25, 2016.
He was born in Quinn, SD on Sept. 18, 1953 to Fred and Leona (Brech) Kury. In 1962, Gordon, his parents and four siblings moved to Custer, SD, where they purchased and ran Dillon's Court Motel for many years. In 1971, Gordon joined the U.S. Army where he served with the 1st Aviation Division as a helicopter mechanic stationed at Fort Riley, KS. In 1974, he returned to Custer where he worked as a machinist apprentice under Roy Cacek and Roy Stender. He then owned and operated "Gordon's Welding" thru 1987, and then worked at the Cheyenne Pine Tongue' Lumber Sawmill in Ashland, MT, until it closed in 2002, followed by Mintec and Pacer as a millwright until he was forced to retire in December 2015, due to illness.
Gordon always admired the beauty and serenity of the Black Hills. He was his happiest being outdoors working with his hands, tinkering and "jerry rigging" some type of gadget until it worked like new or even better! His hobbies included gold panning, collecting various types of rocks, fishing, and combing the area for treasures with his metal detector. He was a hardworking and humble man, always willing to lend a helping hand when there was a need. His greatest joy was seeing his family happy.
Gordon will forever be missed by his family and friends.
